A cold day on the water fishing Gene Cailey’s Coffeen Winter Circuit. With a take off temperature of around 15 degrees and a gusty Northwest wind a 15-25 mph (which stayed all day long) it was definitely cold. But the fishing was very good! There were 38 teams that showed up to take the Coffeen challenge. They all did fairly well. There were 19 limits and 172 fish turned in. That’s pretty good. The lake has come up about 2 foot from the rain and snow the last couple of weeks. With that rain came good looking stained water. The cold day was met with a great pot of chili from Pat, Gene’s wife at the weigh in. On with the stats!

The first place check along with the big bass check went to the father and son team of Mike Evanoff and Tony Evanoff of Granite City, IL. Our big bass weighed in at 5.11 pounds. This big bass had two sisters in the live well to match the 5-pound mark. Our total weight was a phenomenal 21.80 pounds. The fish came on Team Diawa lipless crank baits and E-Factor spinner baits. The lipless crank bait was fished in 2-4 foot of water ripping the weed beds. The spinner bait was an E-Factor 3/4 oz chartreuse and white Colorado blade thrown in less than a foot of water. The fish were hauled in with a 6-½ foot medium heavy Falcon rod and 15-pound Seaguar line. What a great day! Our sponsors include 7/24 outdoors and E-Factor Lures.
